CHAPTER 17

IVY

“You might be wondering where you are…” I drag my words for effect, trailing my hand along the steel bench where he’s strapped down. “Or who I am.”

We’re alone.

Having free rein in the torture chamber is a treat, and I plan to make the most of it. A layer of sweat covers Anthony’s greying skin. Poor diddums isn’t enjoying the role reversal. His chest jumps with the thumping beat of his heart. I can almost hear it slamming against his ribs, ticking like a bomb about to explode.

“How about now?” I slam my hands on either side of his ugly face and loom over him. “Do you recognise me now that you’ve had a closer look?”

My nose wrinkles at the smell of his rancid breath as his eyes stare at me blankly. I laugh hysterically, spraying him with my spit. He doesn’t know who I am. That’s how little my sister or I meant to him. He can’t even remember my fucking face.

“Let me remind you,” I snarl.

Before Penelope wiped our existence from the internet and Daisy’s belongings were disposed of, Alaric set aside one photograph for me. The photograph never leaves HQ, although I retrieved it for tonight. It’s a special occasion, after all.

“Do you remember now?” I thrust the image into his face, but he squeezes his eyes shut. My voice reverberates off the walls as I yell, “Look at her!”

His eyelids open. My stomach churns as he visually violates her. He doesn’t deserve to look at her, but he has to know why he’s here. A flicker of recognition crosses his previously vacant gaze. There. A strangled noise comes from the back of his throat. He knows.

“Do you remember her face now?” I ask. “The face of the girl you killed.”

I took the picture on my last visit to see her. A rare weekend when Spencer let me out of his sight. We took Pippy for a walk along the pebbly beach from Aldeburgh to Thorpeness, stopping to eat chips and getting ambushed by seagulls on the way. We sat at the lake to watch the rowing boats, and she asked about the bruises on my arms. I lied and told her I had fallen.

“Did you think I was dead too, Anthony?” I move the photo out of the splash zone and keep talking as I put on gloves. “Unfortunately for you, I’m back from the grave. But my sister wasn’t so lucky.”

He loses control of his bladder and piss soaks through his trousers. It runs off the bench, leaving a steaming puddle on the floor.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

“Ruining my heels won’t stop me,” I say as my fingers close around the hilt of a knife. “You can’t escape. There’s nowhere to run, and I’m going to show you the same mercy you showed my sister.”

I position the blade under his eye. I slide it down his cheek, neck, and chest. It’s sharp enough to slice through his top like butter and leave a deep gash behind. Tears fill his eyes.
